Default Nevada is America's Most Dangerous State

Crimes of opportunity have helped to make Nevada the most dangerous place to be in the nation. It leads in robberies and stolen cars and comes in third in murders.

But Nevada law enforcement says the dangerous ranking is unfair because it is based off 2006 crimes, omitting the improvement made in the past year and a half.

"There are challenges sometimes. We are ahead of the curve, sometimes we are clawing to catch up, but we did that and 07' was really a breakthrough year for us," said Metro Lt. Robert Duvall.

They admit in 2006 work needed to be done, but changes have had an effect

"Our numbers have steadily gone down and in some cases they have gone down in double digit numbers," said Metro officer Jose Montoya.

According to Metro, the numbers for 2007 do show a 22-percent decrease in homicide and a near 17-percent decrease in auto theft, some of the crimes that earned Nevada the number one spot in this report.

I think a concerted effort by Nevada should be done to trim down the robberies so that more people will want to stay there year round. That can only improve things for the state.

It must be a priority for them. Lots of place who rely on tourism have good police forces and a supportive community. I've heard that crime in Jamaica very often avoids tourists, it is more often locals who are the targets.
