BetonSports has reportedly fired 800 of its workers in Costa Rica and Antigua and is ceasing its business in the US in an effort to head off huge fines by US authorities.
The company's CEO, David Carruthers, who was later fired, was arrested last month after stopping off in America while en route from London to the company's gambling base in Costa Rica. He is one of 11 people and four companies charged with alleged violations of America's Wire Act, which outlaws the placing of bets on sporting events via the telephone. A warrant also has been issued for the arrest of BetonSports founder Gary Stephen Kaplan, 47, who is charged with 20 violations, including tax evasion and conspiracy. The company, which is listed in the UK and operates mainly out of Costa Rica, has 80 per cent of its business coming from the US. The job cuts which took place on Thursday afternoon in its Costa Rican and Antiguan offices, reduces its workforce by more than 60 per cent. It leaves about 500 people still working for BetonSports – 300 in Kuala Lumpar, 200 in South America and a handful in Europe.
