Profits Cause Trouble for Indian Tribes
MADISON, Wisconsin – As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "Gaming profits are "tearing us apart" as members of the state's 11 Indian tribes, a leader of one of those tribes told legislators this morning.
"Patricia R. DePerry, chairwoman of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, called the scramble by tribes for gaming and casino profits one of several 'hidden, lurking ugly' issues that have taken the state's tribes into an era of 'self-termination.'
"… DePerry also said Indians must be respected as equal partners in governing, since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that they are sovereign nations…"
