My girlfriend doesn't like me gambling. She says that it is something only disillusioned people do, and the whole point is to keep gambling until you lose. We argued about it for a while, and I finally convinced her to come with me to a casino for the first time in her life, in the hope that I could spark my interest in her. I set her off easy at the roulette with 50/50 odds on $20, and she just happened to WIN. She then looked at me with a "well now what" face, and I realized she just doesn’t get what's fun about it. I then started thinking: even though I have a lot more fun at the casino than her, in the total balance of wins VS losses, it is very likely that she has a greater chance of keeping her profits (granted she knows the game, of course) than me, simply because she is not driven by the hopes of scoring large. I asked my friends and no one seemed to have a straightforward answer to my question "is someone who hates playing actually more likely to win that someone who loves playing?"

My guess would be "no." Someone who hates to play will go to the casinos far less and therefore their long-term payoff will be less. I guess a case could be made in the opposite direction (if you don;t play, you don't lose), but it seems that anyone who hates it that much simply won't engage in the activity.

Too bad she didn't catch the gambling bug like you did. I imagine the two of you could have had a ton of fun at the casino.

This is the everlasting question… you will never get one simple answer. But you cannot deny that your emotions and desire affect your total profits… My friend Daniel is a contributor for different websites and he wrote a funny piece about comparing casino playing to the stock market, read it and remember to keep your emotions out of the casino.

I think someone who hates playing - although may play less - their time spent and win/loss ratio may end up being good. In saying that - the player needs to have some strategy and not dumb luck. But the biggest advantage for this person might be that they have more of a will to walk away with small profits - and not to chase losses. Someone who loves to gamble plays a lot with emotion - which usually isn't good to do.
